I ASKED FOR WONDER is a time-bending exploration of ‘misogynoir,’ a surreal representation of the sensations of difference and ‘othering’ of Blackness in the North West of England and the slippery, cyclical search for adequate representation.
Written and Directed by Compass Residency artist Amy Lawrence, I ASKED FOR WONDER is an experimental short film that presents a surreal visual reflection on the director’s personal experiences of othering and misogynoir. This reality is reimagined as a dystopian ‘no-man’s land’ where time shifts randomly throwing the protagonist – Lunar – between a series of moments. I ASKED FOR WONDER is a representation of Amy’s personal history, the power of inherited knowledge, racial othering and what it means to see yourself, a Black/mixed heritage woman, represented in places you’re not expecting.
