Leeds Sauce Week
Compass Festival 2024 begins with our first ever Leeds Sauce Week from 1–8 November, working with a whole host of Leeds’ incredible independent bakeries, delis, cafés and bars to put ‘Leeds Sauce’ on the menu.
The unique (bright pink!) rhubarb ketchup was developed in 2022 by artists Popeye Collective led by Freddie Yauner, Kiran Gill and Ed Blake, in collaboration with people all over Leeds.
Now we’re giving you the chance to try it all over the city, with your lunch, in an after work drink or as a weekend treat, from 1–8 November.
The project is all about highlighting our relationships with food and place, and reimagining food systems by putting locality and community at the centre.
Leeds Sauce Week is a way of celebrating Leeds’ independent spirit and encouraging you to support your local – your local cafe, local bakery and even your local arts festival!

Leeds Sauce is a creation by Popeye Collective, who encourage conversations over food as a catalyst for new culture, inspired by plant-based food systems. The collective is led by Freddie Yauner, Ed Blake and Kiran Gill.
This year’s batch has been made according to a slightly tweaked recipe by chef Jade Crawley of Shiko Group and previously Fearns, The Tetley and Eat Your Greens.
